Many people absolutely love their cushions and just can’t get enough of them on the sofa, on the chairs and all over the bed, but there are also those that can't see the point of them. They argue that a cushion just takes up the seating space or has to be taken off the bed at night only to be put back on in the morning when you leave the room. Whats the point!!

Well fans of the cushion argue that when thrown onto a cosy settee or arranged neatly on a formal chair, a cushion can change the ambience and look of a room. They can bring out the personality of the house owner and showcase their style.

Cushions are popular these days and feature in most home magazine room settings. Anything goes when it comes to style, from iconic vintage, jazzy patterns and floral favourites to ultra modern shapes and textures.

Colours can blend with the décor of the room or stand out big and bold to catch the eye as you enter. Not in the too distant past, all cushions were flat and made mainly of what we think of as curtain material, but these days no texture or material is off limits. There are cushions covered in floaty feathers, soft leather patchwork, silk tufts, inlaid lace and many other fabrics and materials.

Fillings vary from feathers, hollow fibre and foam. The type of filling is personal taste. Feathers are soft and luxurious and allow you to sink into them, but the feathers can start to poke out after time and the cushion can lose its plumpness. Some people are allergic to feathers so if your visitor starts sneezing while sitting on your feather cushion clad sofa that could be why.
Aminal lovers may bulk at feather fillings so may prefer a manmade fibre such as hollow fibre.  Usually made of polyester, a fibre filling is soft, bouncy and gives a relaxed feel.
For very low maintenance cushions, opt for a foam filling which is firmer than fibre and  perfect for anyone who can’t be bothered with plumping the cushions...
